For the Weekend Warriors, Weirdos & Whackjobs - Issue #37
What if I told you I couldn't think of a funny headline? Would you hold it against me?
After a few weeks of, well, chaos, your team of bullshiters had a relatively quiet week—vacations, road trips, and reading for fun. But, if you missed it, we still had our moments to be loud.
This week, Justin wrote about Cybershitscurity, and walked us through a troubling breach notification from a prison phone operator. You'll learn how to fact-check, perform supply chain due diligence and how to take the first steps to call bullshit on breach notifications.
And! MJ appeared alongside other familiar OSINT experts on the David Bombal Show to chat techniques on staying invisible online. This is a great discussion that you don't want to miss.
What Justin Listened To
Murder in Oregon (iHeartPodcasts) - The 1990 murder of the head of corrections in Oregon kickstarts this relentless tale of corruption, greed, violence, and sexual predation rarely seen in a single show. From the lowest depths of solitary confinement in some of the most brutal prisons in America all the way to the Oregon State Governor’s Office, this story touches them all. This has to be one of the most well-researched, well-sourced pieces of journalism I have seen in some time.
What Kennedy Watched
Tell Them You Love Me
This is not an easy documentary to watch. Tell Them You Love Me focuses on Anna Stubblefield, a professor who becomes embroiled in what she believes to be a love affair with Derrick Johnson, a non-verbal man with cerebral palsy, that eventually leads to a criminal trial challenging perceptions of disability and the nature of consent.
The documentary is a powerful exploration of control, consent, disability, and race/racism. They tackle the science of “Facilitated Communication,” an assisted typing technique where a facilitator physically supports a person’s hand or arm as they point to letters on a page or keyboard, spelling out words. As we navigate cases of “bad science” at Permanent Record, it was interesting to see a palatable breakdown of how these practices can go insidiously uncovered.
Can be found on Netflix.
Now, it’s Friday. Kick your shoes off and take it sleazy, nerds.
With Love,
