For the Weekend Warriors, Weirdos & Whackjobs - Issue #100
Bursting into those triple digits, graceless and crude
Alright, let’s not do a whole big thing about it (I say to no one aside from myself, cause, really, who cares?). We’ve done 100 of these now, and that ought to count for something.
We haven’t always known what to say. Some weeks this was the exact right writing practice we needed for catharsis or connection, while other weeks it felt like climbing Mt. Everest just to get it out of the proverbial door. But it’s always been true that we simply want to keep going.
We like being weird with y’all, so here’s to 100 more.
What We Wrote
Hitting all inboxes was The Insomniac’s Feed. From a weeks-long spell of insomnia, Kennedy monologues on how fear keeps us pushing through the algorithm, to the next video, the next article. It’s a machine specifically built to profit off emotional freeze, which is hard to escape these days.
Out to paid subscribers on Tuesday was Rules for Thee But Not For Me. Justin weighs in on hypocrisy within the child protection space, and the impact of playing CSAM in open court, on both the jury and the unconsenting victims.
What Justin Recommends
Movie | WNUF Halloween Special (2013) - One of my favourite found-footage movies that combines the main TV Special with 90s commercials, and the viewpoint of the “watcher” — which itself is an interesting spin. Often missed between the Paranormal Activity series and the more recent, Late Night With the Devil, this is a must-watch for those that love the genre.
Article | The Complicated Case of Jorge Ruiz by Amy Yurkanin (ProPublica) - A fatal car crash in Alabama would create a perfect storm of circumstances for young, Jorge Ruiz, a Mexican immigrant. With a disproportionate charge of murder and the odds stacked against him, Amy Yurkanin walks us through the harrowing tale that may have many others like it bubbling up throughout the US in coming years.
Podcast | Satanic Hysteria! on Colors of the Dark Podcast - The titans of horror, Fangoria, have an amazing podcast called Colors of the Dark. In this episode, the hosts take a trip through the Satanic Panic with filmmaker Matthew Scott Kane. Well worth the listen along with many of their other back episodes.
Go touch some grass or moss (literal, not derogatory), blink at the moon, remember you have a spine. We’ll be here when you need us next week.
Until next time,
