For the Weekend Warriors, Weirdos & Whackjobs - Issue #39
Black history in horror and public records requests for cybersecurity breaches close out this week of weird.
Our very own
appeared on the Fraudish podcast this week, hosted by the legendary fraud hunter, Kelly Paxton. In this discussion they talk illicit Canadian marriages, West Coast homies and whether children in fact do make the best embezzlers. Go give it a listen! On our very own chalkboard, this week saw Justin scribble the second part to his Cybershitcurity series that details a poorly reported cybersecurity breach by Telmate, the very company many of us use to communicate with incarcerated individuals in the United States. In this second part, he teaches you how to write targeted public records requests to tease out records from law enforcement and regulators alike.
What Justin Recommends
Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror (Amazon Prime/Shudder) - this is an excellent examination of how Black people have been represented in horror and in film more broadly. Using actors and directors as sources, the filmmakers walk us through the history of horror from the Black perspective - from Birth of a Nation to Candyman and beyond. Along the way, the you learn of the interlocked societal changes that often happened in Black horror film, like any art form, that also impacts what happens in the voting booth, in your neighbourhood and the larger medium itself. An absolute must watch for horror and non-horror fans alike.
Thank you to everyone who has subscribed, sent words of encouragement this week and for reading all the way down here. We know that’s never an easy task on a Friday.
