For the Weekend Warriors, Weirdos & Whackjobs - Issue #69
We're far too mature to make a joke about the issue #... right?
This week, Justin took us for a check-bouncing-ride-along that traipses from a sleepy Sacramento suburb to Saskatchewan, Canada in his post: Bad Religion, Bad Checks and the Canadian Football League. While the post may weave and wind, the larger point is that local storytelling and local journalism always has connections to much larger—and more global things. And boy do we need local journalism right now, y’all.
What Justin Recommends
Satan’s Silence - Book
The Satanic Panic of the 1980s touched our homes in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and many others, yet the concept of child sexual abuse rings and the apparent inscrutability of child abuse investigations still persists. This book does an incredibly good job at explaining just how we got here, and although written 30 years ago it is not only prescient but relevant still today.
Get out your highlighters, sticky notes and stringboard because it contains a who’s-who of fucked up cases, fear peddlers and conspiracies long before they were immortalized in podcasts and YouTube channels.
Stretch out, exhale, and gather your wits—another week of chaos and cunning awaits
Much love,
Your Bullshit Hunting Crew
