For the Weekend Warriors, Weirdos & Whackjobs - Issue #127
Proof of life
Not even all the caffeine spilled in the Boston Harbor would be enough to keep us invigorated on a snowy Friday after a long week, so let’s start easing into the weekend, shall we?
This week, we had a Kennedy double feature for paid and unpaid subscribers.
Going out to everyone was “It was spring, perhaps.” With a recent focus on grooming cases, Kennedy reflects on memory and what we expect of victims and witnesses. How we hold onto the unremarkable, how we lose it just as easily, and what happens when systems demand precise detail from people whose experiences were never built to be remembered that way.
In paid inboxes was a slightly updated release of a Bullshit Hunting favourite, The Cult of Productivity. This one takes aim at hustle culture, productivity theatre, and the billion-dollar industry built on convincing you that exhaustion is a personal failure. From LinkedIn routines to influencers that contradict themselves, this is part rant, part investigation into the mythology of self-optimization.
What Kennedy Recommends
Book | No More Mediocre by Laura Danger
During the pandemic, many people found themselves spending more time on social media. While it’s not the place we oughta be, I was one of those people who used that strange and isolating moment in history to create content. It was a fun, creative way to pass the time and led to finding community in people I wouldn’t have otherwise met. One of those people was Laura Danger.
Laura began creating videos on domestic equity and quickly became a prominent voice in conversations about household dynamics, power, equity, and care. I clearly remember the moment I watched her first video about “weaponized incompetence.” Her way of simply distilling complex cultural, systemic, and gendered issues resonated with me, and clearly, many others.
I was quick to pre-order her book, both the physical and audio versions, and I’m glad I did.
Drawing from case studies, including nontraditional, intentionally developed family structures, and her own experience with mental illness and the demands of work and family life, Laura provides communication models and actionable steps you can take to restructure your household, home and partnerships to simply live better.
