For the Weekend Warriors, Weirdos & Whackjobs - Issue #53
Take a deep breath, ok? We're chilling in this here email.
If you’ve ever wondered how tenacious we can be when it comes to our research and investigations, wonder no more. This week, our lioness-lawyer shared how one would go about tracking down a soul-sucking captain in her instalment: Tracking the Hellship Montezuma.
What Kennedy Watched: Sweet Bobby
You may have seen it already—Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare. It's a new Netflix documentary about a woman's years long online relationship with a man that completely upends her life. The documentary is based on a podcast from Tortoise Media that came out in 2021. I remember when I devoured it during a long layover in a boring, nondescript airport and how no layover had ever been more thrilling.
How I felt watching the documentary was surprising, and a great commentary on how different mediums offer us completely different capacities for storytelling. Over the course of a 7-episode podcast, you empathize with the victim and come to understand the cruel calculation of her manipulator. Sure, you shake your head here and there—we’d all like to believe we’re incapable of delusion—but it's somewhat understandable. When presented as a tidy 82-minute documentary… the empathy is harder to find.
If you've enjoyed one but not the other or neither, give them a shot and see how you feel. I'd love to know if anyone had a similar experience!
Hang in there bullshit hunters, the weekend is here! Time to recharge.
