For the Weekend Warriors, Weirdos & Whackjobs - Issue #27
A full issue from people full of issues.
This week, we took a break from bad forensics, death, mayhem and shoddy police work to start instead looking at how dicey Chinese tech companies can shove even dicier apps onto unwitting consumers and investors. In part one of a two-part series, You Always Remember Your First, you’ll get an introduction to Qutoutiao ($QTT) and Justin’s first short selling adventure.
In our advocacy work, our friends in Los Angeles saw Lamont Kellum Jr. interviewed by CanvasRebel Magazine. In the interview, Lamont talks poetry, incarceration and as always, shows a vulnerability not often seen from a man in his position. He’s also currently incarcerated for life for a crime he didn’t commit and intends to be an agent for change.
Go read the interview here and be sure to check our Advocacy page for Lamont’s case, his Spotify album and other cases and causes we fight for.
What We Installed This Week - Reduvic
We are seemingly inundated with traumatic imagery of war, genocide, local crime, harm to animals, and even sports injuries. The number of knee-jerk moments we are exposed to daily seems endless.
Former Product Lead (and our former colleague!) at Hunchly, Phil Morris-Parent, created this beautifully simple yet incredibly powerful extension named Reduvic—a clever play on “reducing vicarious trauma.”
You may remember us writing on this topic many moons ago, right here on this Substack, in fact, and more recently, how trauma impacts juries.
In this house? We talk about trauma at work and in our personal lives. It’s as real as the sky is blue, and we need more tools that work automatically behind the scenes to help humans experience less of it.
Go try it out and browse Twitter with it turned on for a day. We’re sure you’ll love it:

What Kennedy & Justin Watched This Week
Late Night With the Devil (2023) - Shudder/Amazon Prime
As it says. A Late Night talk show with the devil himself. What more do you want us to say?
From Justin: This movie is fan-fucking-tastic and was a last-minute recommendation on a cold Friday by da boss, Kennedy. It did not disappoint, with some of the most disturbing (and unique) visuals, camera shots and an aesthetic that just won’t quit. This one has curves. The detail in the set of the game show where this horror story is shot is just nailed to such a level of perfection it’s hard not to feel like you’re in the audience. A head-spinning, thoroughly entertaining ride. 10/10.
From Kennedy: Late Night with the Devil had a limited theatre release, with a total of one theatre in our city playing the movie at 10:30 pm. I did what the kids do, took a legal “garden” gummy, and found myself laughing too hard through what felt like sixteen opening production logos. By the end of the movie, I wasn’t laughing. Do I have some criticisms and critiques on the final act? I sure do. But this movie was campy, it was aesthetic, and pulled in so many beloved elements of horror classics.
Oh, did I mention it’s no more than 90 minutes? We love that.
Go slap some reggae on the turntable. Turn the lights down low, and shake that ass, slowly.
Take it easy this weekend.
