For the Weekend Warriors, Weirdos & Whackjobs - Issue #139
Go ahead, make my day
Good? Good.
This week, you had two from Kennedy.
Out to everyone was a quick lesson in context with Congratulations, You Read the Abstract. What started as a misunderstanding of a study on domestic violence became a vastly overused internet comment. We follow one of social media's favourite talking points about lesbian relationships back to the original CDC research, unpack what the study actually measured, and explore how data can become myth one missing detail at a time.
In paid inboxes. We were missing last year’s fictional horror series, Accounts Vary, so we dipped our toes back into the art of the tall tale with The Restoration. You meet your narrator at the beginning of a new job. Hired to identify thousands of old family photographs after an estate sale, they find certain copies at odds with their originals. A story about memory and what happens when we preserve history with artificial “enhancements.”
What Kennedy Recommends
Sick in bed, I found myself perusing documentaries.
A fascinating documentary about legendary climber Dean Potter, whose career was defined by an endless drive to push the limits of what was possible.
Even if you have no interest in climbing, it’s a worthwhile watch. The four-part series explores ambition, risk, obsession, and the complicated legacy of someone who inspired countless people while also making choices that deeply affected those around him. The climbing footage is an affecting watch, your heart will likely race; but it’s the human elements of the story that were of particular interest to me.
Available wherever you watch HBO.
That’s it, that’s all, folks.
Catch you on the flip.
Love,
Your Bullshit Hunting Crew
